Funnily enough Ash you have made some very similar points to me regarding the hardware that will make Windows 8 sing.

Firstly that touch will be a major component of the OS and a device that both performs as a slate and for information worker will be a challenge.

Secondly, Microsoft needs to make the interaction between their devices, in the home, easier. The Apple ecosystem has already achieved this, albeit in a completely controlled environment from the hardware to the OS.

Thanks! I was actually looking for this! As opposed to most people out there I really like the reverse scrolling, it seems more logical somehow as you stated :)
The computer at work is on Windows XP, so this tweak is very handy!

Thanks again.

We did end up getting something to work - I can't remember for the life of me but.

I think the issue we had was using Acronis's "restore anywhere" function (if that's what it's called?). Essentially what it does, is replaces the drivers when you do the restore, so that you can boot it up on any hardware you like.

I suspect we may have skipped that completely and said, no, you already have the right drivers, go away. Either that or I did a repair install on the OS (probably the likely scenario actually...)

On the point of using group policy to configure windows for auditing one could always use security filtering. Create a security group add the workstations / servers you want monitored to it. Create the audit policy and add the group you created for apply and do not apply to any other group like authenticated users. Link the policy at a level in your ou structure that would encompass the systems that were added to the group and you are on your way to centralized audit configuration.

Hi Ash

Last time we spoke I was looking to move up in the world of IT and your article certainly helped me out.

One of the things I've always said about IT is it's similar to being a doctor. You don't want someone with 10 years experience and no qualifications doing a heart transplant or someone fresh out of uni. IT is an industry where it's good to have a mix between the two, qualifications for the resume and experience for getting the job.

I wasn't as lucky as a lot of people my age and wasn't fortunate enough to be given the option to go to university (it wasn't the OP scores, rather the home and financial situations) so I've had to go off experience alone. Starting working in various computer stores, sometimes without getting paid at all for around 5 years and now contracting for one of the largest IT outsourcing company known as CSC. I've only been there a month but I've already moved up and have been given my own accounts for some of the largest mining companies in the world as well as the opportunity to be put on a fly in fly out basis for mine sites around Australia.

The next step from here? Qualifications, I've wanted to be a security analyst or ethical hacker since the age of 11 or 12 and it might take me a while to get there but it's something I can see myself doing for a long time, if not the rest of my working life.
